07.10.202612:25:31UTC+00Mexico Auto Output Falls as US Tariff Risks Weigh

Mexico’s automobile production dropped 15.1% year-on-year to 301,803 units in September 2026, deepening from a 1.4% decline in August. The contraction underscored persistent uncertainty in the auto industry, as shifting US trade policies continued to disrupt manufacturers’ planning. The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on several key trading partners, including Mexico, while Washington and Mexico City remain engaged in bilateral trade talks. The USMCA stayed in effect following its 2026 joint review, but outstanding disputes leave open the possibility of substantial revisions. Production losses were particularly steep at Mercedes‑Benz (-100%), Acura (-48.8%), General Motors (-27.1%) and Nissan (-26.3%).
